Antarctica
Over the next few weeks you will be looking the great southern continent of Antarctica
What do you have to do?

Task 1: An introduction to Antarctica,The Antarctic Treaty and how Antarctica is governed.
a) Write a short introduction to Antarctica including a description of the continent. Make sure you include a map and some photographs.
b) You are to make a postcard giving your first impressions of Antarctica after arriving on the continent. Include a suitable photograph.
c) You are then to review the Antarctic Treaty and comment on each of the treatys Articles. More information on the Treaty can be found here.
Task 2: The climate of Antarctica.
a) Make a climate graph for the Vostok South Pole Research Base. The climate data can be found here
b) Describe the climate graph giving maximum and minimum temperatures, average temperature, wettest and driest month.
c) Produce a general description of the Antarctic climate.
Task 3: The Ecosystem of the Southern Ocean and the importance of Krill.

a) Create a food web showing why Krill is so important to life in the Southern Ocean.
b) Use photographs to show the wide variety of marine life found in the Southern Ocean.

Task 4: Living and working on Antarctica.
Applying for a job on Antarctica. Use the questions on this website to write a letter, applying for a job on Antarctica. Think about the skills you would need and the type of person who would be suited to working in such an extreme environment.

This work makes up the core of your project and you should complete each of these tasks. However I want you to then add your own ideas and inspiration to the project. What is it about Antarctica that interests you the most? You may want to look at one of the topics above in more detail. Alternatively you may want to pick another topic such as the ones below.
Science:
You may be interested in the scientific research that is being carried out there such as the attempt to drill 1km through the ice to reach a lake or the impact that climate change is having on the continent.
